CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- UNI Soccer kicked off the 2022 season in style with a 2-1 win against the Grand View Vikings.

Two penalty kicks and a late goal were the highlights in a Panther win during their home opener at UNI Soccer Field. In a game where it was tied for all but seven minutes, UNI kept possession and pace in their favor as they allowed just one shot from the Vikings.

The Panthers took 19 shots throughout the game as seven made their way on goal. But the first goal of the game went to Grand View as Kenzie Langstraat scored on a penalty kick in the 36th minute. The Viking lead wouldn't last for long as junior forward Lauren Heinsch got a penalty kick opportunity of her own two minutes later. Heinsch buried the solo shot in the bottom right corner of the net to tie the game back up in the 38th minute.

UNI kicked it into high gear in the second half taking 12 shots resulting in the game-winning goal. Sophomore midfielder Siri Ott found the back of the net in the 85th minute off a corner kick from freshman forward Sydney Burskey for her first collegiate assist. The Panthers would get three more shots on goal before the final horn sounded, taking their first victory of the season 2-1.

Along with scoring the first goal, Heinsch led the way on the field offensively. Heinsch along with freshman Caroline Hazen, and junior Ashley Harrington all tallied three shots over 90 minutes. On the defensive side of the ball, defender Allison Whitaker and midfielder Maddie Celarek spent 90 minutes on the field.
