CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The Panthers welcome their first transfer of the 2023-24 women's basketball team to Cedar Falls.

UNI women's basketball has signed its first transfer of the season, redshirt sophomore forward Shateah Wetering. Wetering comes to the Panthers from Iowa and is originally a Montezuma native.

"We are so excited to welcome Shateah to our Panther family!" says Head Coach Tanya Warren. "We had the chance to watch her through her high school and AAU career, and she is a perfect fit for us and this team. She's extremely versatile, and her ability to run the floor allows her to score in a variety of ways.

"Shateah can score in the paint, she can shoot the three-ball, and score off the bounce. She gives us some immediate depth on the inside by joining our post rotation."

In her three years at Iowa, Wetering saw limited action due to an ACL tear in her sophomore season. As a freshman, Wetering played in seven games while making 15 appearances this past season for the Hawkeyes. As a high schooler, Wetering was a decorated three-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball, and track and field.

At Montezuma High School, Wetering set the career record for field goals made and career points (977) with the Braves. Wetering earned several accolades in high school, including being named a three-time all-conference team member, a two-time Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-district member, a two-time Iowa Basketball Coaches Association all-region member, and the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association all-state selection.

As a junior, Wetering was selected to the state basketball all-tournament team under head coach Janel Burgess. During her junior season, Wetering averaged 18.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 2.9 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game, helping the Braves advance to the 1A Final Four and win the South Iowa Cedar League (SICL) Championship.

Wetering also played club basketball with All-Iowa Attack under coaches Dickson Jensen and Randy Mauro, where she was a teammate of current Panthers Kayba Laube and Maya McDermott. With Attack, Wetering helped the team win the 2017 United States Junior National Championships and the 2018 Nike National Championships.

Shateah is the daughter of Justin and Shiloh Wetering and is one of six siblings. Her siblings include two brothers, Jevohn Miller, a former Iowa State football player, and Jusiah Wetering, and three sisters, Shealynn Miller, a track and field athlete at Mount Mercy, Shanae Wetering, and Shiressa Wetering.
